WHY INVEST IN JSDCL?

The Jane Stern Dorado Community Library (JSDCL) was founded in 1974 and has grown to be the most trusted community library in Puerto Rico. We provide educational programs and social services to families in five municipalities. Most of our programs are free and the rest are offered at a fraction of their cost. Our services are aimed at local families, over half of whom struggle below the poverty line. These are the families who have depended upon us through hurricanes, earthquakes, and pandemic closures for a community learning center.

JSDCL provides a wide range of programs from free College Board tutoring and preparation, six weeks of educational summer workshops, training for employment in the tech field, STEM LEGO Club, storytime, instrumental music classes, Tae Kwan Do and dance training, and more, to families who would not otherwise be able to access these opportunities.

JSDCL also serves to supplement the limited educational resources of our local public schools. Elementary schools in Puerto Rico do not have libraries or after-school programs to enrich these young minds and provide opportunities for successful citizenship. The lack of free public Wi-Fi also negatively impacts 21st-century education. Public school teachers in five towns rely upon us to access reliable free internet, print classroom materials, and the small satellite JSDCL libraries embedded in their schools.  Every year we rely on caring citizens, local businesses, and Foundations. We also apply for discretional Federal and local grants to be able to fulfill our mission.
