The main library in Dorado provides a variety of activities and courses for all ages in the school year months of August through May, with summer activities for children in June and July and a two-week break for the holidays of December and January. During the year classes are scheduled depending on interest, sponsors, space, and availability of qualified instructors and/or volunteers. Library membership ($1:00 annually for students; $10:00 for adults) is required in order to register for a program.

Student Volunteer Program

Student commitment to specific after-school hours on a pre-determined schedule provides valuable help to the library as well as an important job experience for the students while they satisfy their required community service hours. They help others in the computer labs, tutor in the afterschool Math sessions or in "Mano por Hermanos" peer to peer tutoring program. They shelve books and handle other library tasks, serve as Lego program assistants or Summer workshop helpers during the summer. Requirements:

  • An endorsement from a teacher, guidance counsellor or parent/caregiver.

  • The means to get to the library and get home.  JSDCL cannot provide transportation.

"Manos por Hermanos" (Students helping Students)

Children from elementary grades through high school may register to be matched with another student child or teen for peer to peer help with homework in any subject. Good students in a chosen subject may register to be matched with another student who needs help.
